To make a statement……

How to make a statement…….this is the difficult question that we as artists are faced with. As visual communicators it doesn’t tend to be instinctive for us to write about our work and intentions. Then, when we do, how do we write that adds to and reflects something that is often complicated, personal and illusive? It can lead to feelings of being pushed to confirm to commercial pressures, frustration and helplessness while trying to find ways to be authentic in our statement.
So yesterday at Metàfora, the curator, Juan Canela (one of Barcelona’s young and dynamic curators) braved the nervous and agitated students and gave us his guidance. Juan was excellent. He started by addressing all our concerns and helped us understand the need, relevance and role of a statement. We read many statements, comparing the styles, looking at the artwork to see if they really reflected well the intentions of the artist and then discussed our own. Juan made what could have been a dull and alienating topic a fantastic, relevant, engaging and informative session.
